Bored after class? Too much free time in between classes? Or maybe you’re just looking for a new adventure with some friends? These places listed here are one of my favourite places to chill when I was studying at KDU Penang and I’m sure this list will lure you to Penang real soon!
1. HAMMOCK CAFE, LORONG MACALLISTER
This cafe is so chill. The atmosphere in this cafe is so relaxing and it gives you the kinda vibes as if you’re at home. If you need to relax or do some kinda revision or some assignments, this would be the perfect place. The food here however, is D to the E to the L I C I O U S. Of course this cafe is named “Hammock” for a reason, it is filled with them inside. I suggest you give this cafe a try.
2. GURNEY DRIVE
If you need some alone time or just want to enjoy the sea breeze, you can talk a walk down Gurney Drive. In the morning may sometimes be a little too hot but you can find lots of both young and old people who jogs in this area. At night though, towards the end of Gurney Drive, you see a huge food court. A lot of people tend to come here but honestly the prices here are cut-throat.
3. K.POT, PRIMA TANJUNG
If you are a fan of Korea and its culture, you’re gonna love this place! The food here is super good and its got a very welcoming feel. The owner of this place, he also works there, is from Korea and the food they serve here are cooked by his family members. It’s like a family business. The price though are so reasonable. Some meals are a big portion and if you bring lots of friends with you, so worth it, seriously.
4. CREPE COTTAGE, GURNEY DRIVE
Even though this place is a little small and narrow, the food portion is BIG. This place is most suitable if you’re craving for something sweet and/or cold. If you’re looking for a bright and happy atmosphere, this is definitely the place to be.
5. MACALLUM CONNOISSEURS, GAT LEBUH MACALLUM
This cafe used to be a factory back in the days and its been refurnished and made beautiful so it can be a pretty yet classic looking cafe. In this bright and clean atmosphere, you can finally eat delicious good-looking food while feeling so much at ease. Bring your friends, you don’t wanna be sharing this cafe knowledge with yourself.
6. KARPAL SINGH DRIVE
Karpal Singh Drive is especially beautiful at night. The bright lights that lights up the whole background, its perfect here. In the evening you will find lots of children up to adults will be strolling the streets with their bicycles, skateboards and roller skates! Pretty cool huh? Just like Gurney Drive, at night there is a huge food court nearby and the food is great too, price not too bad.
7. STRAITS QUAY
On a beautiful night, the Andaman Sea as the background in your sight and the stars in the sky lights up to brighten up the dark skys. Oh how beautiful this scene will be. Straits Quay is the most beautiful place at night. I used “beautiful” 3 times continuously in a paragraph, is that legal? Just telling ya’ll how beautiful this place is. Straits Quay is also a shopping center and doubles as a great place to have some alone time and think about stuff.
8. QUEENSBAY MALL
The Jerujak Island and the Penang Bridge becomes a view that takes the breath away of people who pass by here. If you feel like just chilling and just relaxing, this is where you go. Its away from town but its near to Penang Island’s biggest mall.
9. HUEY&WAH @ THE MARSHMALLOW, LORONG BELISSA
If you’re craving something hot on a chilly day, this is where you should be! If you’re craving for a soft and sweet candy like MARSHMALLOW, Huey&Wah cafe makes their OWN marshmallows. In this cafe the interior makes you relax and there’s a second floor to this cafe with a reading corner. Sounds cool no? Whenever you’re in Penang, go try this cafe lah. Worth it. The last I came here, I bought a whole packet of their marshmallows, it’s so good.
